Mixed Berry Lemonade — A Half Gallon for $2.56, No Cooking Required
A Half Gallon of Summer for $2.56
This mixed berry lemonade is the drink I make all summer long when I want something that feels like a treat without the fancy-drink price tag — a whole half gallon for about $2.56, no cooking required, just a blender. I make the simple syrup with warm water instead of the stovetop, blend in frozen berries and lemon juice, strain out the seeds, and stretch it all with cold water and ice. It comes out tart and sweet and that gorgeous deep-pink color, and it could not be easier on a hot afternoon.

Why This Mixed Berry Lemonade Works
The thing that sold me on this mixed berry lemonade is that there is no cooking at all. Instead of standing over a pot making simple syrup the old-fashioned way, I just dissolve one cup of sugar in one cup of warm water until it disappears. The folks at The Kitchn call this the easiest way to make simple syrup, and they are right — you warm the water, you do not boil it, and the sugar melts right in. Then everything goes into my blender and we are off.
From there it is one cup of lemon juice straight from the jar and two cups of frozen mixed berries — and no, I do not even thaw them. The frozen berries do double duty: they bring all that deep berry flavor and they keep the whole batch cold so you need less ice. A quick blend and you have a thick, bright-pink purée that smells like summer.

The one step I will not skip is straining. Berry seeds are tiny but nobody wants them in their glass, so I pour the blended mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into my pitcher before I add anything else. After that it is just four cups of cold water and two cups of ice, a good stir, and you have a full half gallon — enough for my whole family of seven to have a tall glass on the porch, for right around $2.56.
A Few Things That Make Mixed Berry Lemonade Even Easier
- Reach for frozen berries, not fresh. They are cheaper, they are already perfectly ripe, and they keep the lemonade cold so you can go easy on the ice. I buy a big bag and keep it in the freezer all summer.
- Do not skip the strainer. A good fine-mesh strainer catches every seed and gives you that smooth, pretty pour. My old one just wasn’t up for the job, and I could tell.
- Warm water, not boiling. You only need the water warm enough to dissolve the sugar. No stovetop, no waiting for it to cool — that is the whole trick to the no-cook simple syrup.
- Taste and adjust. Want it more tart? Add a splash more lemon juice. Want it milder for the kids? A little extra cold water stretches it without watering down the flavor too much.
- Make it ahead. This keeps beautifully in the fridge for a few days. Just give it a good stir before you pour, since the berry pulp likes to settle.
Mixed Berry Lemonade FAQ — The Questions I Get Every Time
How much does mixed berry lemonade cost to make?
A whole half gallon runs me about $2.56, which works out to roughly 32 cents a cup. Compare that to the three, four, even five dollars you would pay for one fancy berry drink out, and it is not really a contest. That is the whole reason this one stays in my summer rotation.
Do I have to cook the simple syrup?
Nope, and that is my favorite part. You just stir one cup of sugar into one cup of warm water until it dissolves — no stovetop, no boiling, no waiting for it to cool down. Warm tap water does the job just fine.
Can I use fresh berries instead of frozen?
You can, but I almost always use frozen — they are cheaper, already ripe, and they help keep the lemonade cold. Any bag of frozen mixed berries works here; I usually grab a three-berry blend with raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. If you go fresh, you may want a little extra ice.
Do I really need to strain it?
I think it is worth the extra minute. Straining catches the berry seeds and gives you a smooth, clean pour instead of a gritty one. If you do not mind the seeds, you can skip it — but once you have strained a batch, you will see the difference.
How long does mixed berry lemonade keep?
It holds up in the fridge for about three to four days. The berry pulp will settle to the bottom, so just give it a good stir before you pour each time. I would not freeze the finished lemonade though — the texture goes funny once the ice melts back in.
Can I make a bigger batch for a crowd?
Absolutely — one batch already makes a half gallon, so just double or triple everything for a party. Keep the ratios the same and taste as you go, since a really big batch can need a touch more lemon to keep that tart-sweet balance.
