My Big Easter Hosting Fail — 30 People and a Bag of Cat Poop

If you’ve ever had a hosting fail, this post is for you. I hosted 30 people here at the house for Easter lunch — cooked all the food, got the kids ready, cleaned the house, played hostess all day long — and didn’t notice my big Easter hosting fail until everyone was gone. I could have absolutely died. But you know what? We’re laughing about it now, and I’m sharing it with all of you because if it makes you feel better about yourself, I’ll have done my job. 😂

Okay, story time. You probably know by now that I’m not the best housekeeper in the world — I try, I really do, and especially when I’m having a big crowd over, I want to put in that extra effort. So before Easter lunch, I was running around doing all the things: getting food in the oven, getting the kids ready, last-minute straightening. And then I remembered — we have cats now (Dustin and Eddie, for those of you who have been following along!), and I have been paranoid about whether the house smells like the litter box. So I was like, okay, I am going to clean that out Sunday morning right before everyone gets here.

So I did. I cleaned it out, got it all done, and I had a big bag of — let’s just say it — a big bag of cat poop ready to go out to the trash. And right as I was about to take it out the door, I got distracted by something else. So I set the bag down in the little walkway between my living room and my back playroom/kitchen area, thinking, I’ll see it on my way out to church and grab it then.

Y’all. I did not see it on the way out to church.

We came home, 30 people filled up my living room and playroom, sat at tables, walked back and forth through that kitchen area all afternoon — and that bag of cat poop sat in the walkway the entire time. Five feet from where people were sitting at the table. The whole Easter lunch. I only discovered it after everyone was already gone.

I stood there staring at it like… surely someone saw this. Surely someone would have said something. And if they did see it? Well, they were being very nice and kept quiet about it. Which honestly? I appreciate it. But also I am mortified.

Here’s the thing though — this is just real life, y’all. I cook for a crowd, I try to keep a clean house, I love hosting people around my table. And sometimes things go sideways in the most ridiculous ways. According to The Kitchn’s holiday hosting etiquette guide, even the best hosts deal with unexpected hiccups — the key is to just roll with it. (I’m rolling. I’m rolling so hard right now.) The best gatherings aren’t the perfect ones — they’re the ones that give you stories to tell later. And this one? This is going to be a story we tell forever at Easter.

If you want to see the full Easter setup — the food, the tables, all 30 of us together — I shared everything over in my hosting Easter lunch for 30 people post. And if you’re planning to host a crowd yourself anytime soon, that post has everything I made for the meal too.

So tell me — has anything like this ever happened to YOU? I cannot be the only one. Drop it in the comments. Let’s commiserate together. 😂
