3-Ingredient Crockpot Meatballs — The Easiest Party Appetizer You’ll Ever Make

Jump to Recipe

Somebody Deserves a Trophy for This One

3-ingredient crockpot meatballs are the party appetizer I have been making for years, and I am telling you — I have never once brought any home. Not a single one. I made these most recently for a couples bridal shower at our church, and by the time I made it up to the serving table, they were already half gone. Three ingredients, a crockpot, and about five minutes of actual work. That is it. That is the whole recipe. (Stephanie’s video is embedded in the recipe card and her story continues after the recipe.)

Notes

Do not use Italian-style meatballs — the seasonings fight with the sauce. Home style or original only. Any BBQ sauce you love will work — Sweet Baby Ray’s Original, hickory, honey, whatever is your favorite. These keep beautifully on the warm setting for hours, which makes them perfect for parties. Double the batch if you are feeding a large crowd. Running out is a genuine tragedy.
Assemble everything the night before, refrigerate, and plug in the morning of your event for effortless party prep.

The first time I ever heard of putting grape jelly in a meatball recipe, I thought whoever came up with it had completely lost their mind. Grape jelly? In a savory dish? With barbecue sauce? It sounds absolutely bizarre. And then I tried it. And now I make it for every party, every shower, every potluck, every church event. Somebody out there deserves a trophy and I genuinely mean that.

The combination of sweet grape jelly and smoky barbecue sauce creates this incredible sticky, glossy sauce that coats every single meatball perfectly. It is sweet but not too sweet, savory, a little smoky, and completely addictive. People will stand at the serving table and eat these one after another and then look up and ask you what is in them, and when you tell them, they will not believe you.

What kind of meatballs should I use? Home style or original frozen meatballs — do not use Italian style. The seasonings in Italian-style meatballs are too strong for this recipe and they will fight with the sauce instead of letting it shine. Home style meatballs have a milder flavor profile that works perfectly here.

What BBQ sauce should I use? Any BBQ sauce you love will work — sweet, hickory, smoky, whatever is your favorite. Stephanie uses Sweet Baby Ray’s Original because it is the perfect balance of sweet and savory. If you want a little more smoke, go hickory. If you want a sweeter sauce, go honey. You really cannot go wrong here.

Can I make these ahead of time? Absolutely. That is actually one of the best things about this recipe. You can assemble everything in the slow cooker the night before, store it in the fridge, and then plug it in the morning of your event. They will be perfectly ready by the time guests arrive. They also keep warm beautifully in the crockpot on the warm setting for hours — which makes them perfect for parties where people are eating at different times.

How many people does this serve? Party size — at least 25 people as an appetizer. If meatballs are one of several appetizers on the table, this will feed an even bigger crowd. Just make sure you position yourself near the serving table early because they go fast.

The only thing I would change about this recipe is that I would always make a double batch. Learn from my experience. People will eat more of these than you expect, and running out is a genuine tragedy. Two crockpots, double the ingredients, and you will be the most popular person at the party. The Crock Pot Pork Chops on this site use the same effortless crockpot magic — two ingredients, zero fuss, all the flavor.
