The Hill I Will Die On: Chick-fil-A Sauce Is the Best Waffle Fry Sauce

The hill I will die on Chick-fil-A sauce — the best sauce for Chick-fil-A waffle fries, a divided house at the Longstreth table, by Stephanie Longstreth

The hill I will die on Chick-fil-A sauce is one I will plant a flag on right in the middle of my own dinner table, because this is a divided house and I refuse to surrender: the best sauce for a Chick-fil-A waffle fry is the Original Chick-fil-A Sauce, full stop, and I will die on this hill with a fry in one hand and a little dipping cup in the other. My son Alex sits directly across from me, loyal to the Polynesian to his very bones, and we have been going back and forth about this for years. He is wrong. I say that with every ounce of love in my heart. He is my boy, he is a delight, and on this one thing he is wrong.

Let me make my case, because I do not plant a flag without a reason. A Chick-fil-A waffle fry is a specific and glorious thing — crisp on the edges, soft in the middle, salty, and built with all those little ridges and pockets that were practically engineered to hold onto sauce. So the sauce you dip it in is not a small decision. Chick-fil-A Sauce is smoky and tangy with that honey-mustard-meets-barbecue thing going on, and it is thick. Thick enough to actually cling to the fry instead of sliding right off into the bottom of the bag. It settles into every ridge and rides that fry all the way to your mouth. That is not luck. That is destiny in a two-ounce cup.

Now Alex will tell you the Polynesian is sweeter, brighter, and more fun, and I will give him this much: the Polynesian is a perfectly nice sauce. On a nugget, I might even meet him halfway. But on a waffle fry? That sweet-and-sour tang fights the salt instead of hugging it. Chick-fil-A Sauce and salty potatoes were made for each other the way peanut butter was made for jelly — they are better together than either one is alone. The Polynesian is a lovely houseguest. Chick-fil-A Sauce lives here.

And here is where I get to be a little insufferable at my own kitchen table, because I went looking for backup and I found it straight from the source. Chick-fil-A ranks its own sauces by how many people actually order them, and as they are happy to point out, the numbers do not lie. According to Chick-fil-A’s own official sauce rankings, Chick-fil-A Sauce was the clear winner in 2024 — more customers ordered it than any other sauce on the whole menu. And the Polynesian? Second place. Runner-up. First loser, if you want to be unkind about it, and today I do. I read that ranking out loud at dinner, slowly, and I have never enjoyed a fry more in my life.

So here is the hill I will die on Chick-fil-A sauce, one more time for my sweet, misguided son and everybody else out there clutching a Polynesian cup: on a Chick-fil-A waffle fry, the Original Chick-fil-A Sauce is the one, and the corporate rankings and I are in total agreement. Tell me where you land in the comments. Are you Team Chick-fil-A Sauce like me and the official numbers, Team Polynesian like Alex, or one of those honey-mustard or barbecue people about to open up a brand-new front in this war? Bring it on. My flag is planted, there is a little Chick-fil-A Sauce dripping down the pole, and I am not going anywhere.

Hill I Will Die On — Chick-fil-A Sauce FAQ

Isn’t the Polynesian the better sauce, though?

That is exactly what Alex says, usually while pointing a fry at me across the table. Here is my honest answer: the Polynesian is a genuinely good sauce, and on a nugget I will not fight you over it. But this hill is specifically about the waffle fry, and on a salty fry the smoky tang of Chick-fil-A Sauce wins every single time. Sweet-and-sour belongs on the nugget; Chick-fil-A Sauce belongs on the fry.

Why does the sauce matter that much on a fry anyway?

Because a Chick-fil-A waffle fry is not an ordinary fry — it is a little grid of ridges and pockets practically designed to hold whatever you dip it in. A thin, runny sauce just slides right off and pools uselessly in the bag. Chick-fil-A Sauce is thick enough to settle down into all those holes and hang on for the ride. The fry does its part; the sauce has to actually show up too.

Are you really using a corporate sauce ranking to win a family argument?

Absolutely I am, and I would do it again tomorrow twice. Chick-fil-A ranks its own sauces by how many people order them, and Chick-fil-A Sauce came in first while the Polynesian came in second. I did not make those numbers up — Chick-fil-A did, and they said it themselves right on their website. When the company that invented the sauce agrees with me, I consider the matter closed and the fridge is where I taped the proof.

What about honey mustard, barbecue, or ranch on your fries?

All fine sauces, all welcome at my table, none of them the hill I am dying on today. Honey mustard runs a touch too sweet for a fry, the barbecue gets lost, and ranch — bless its heart — is quietly trying to turn my fry into a salad. They can all pull up a chair. Chick-fil-A Sauce sits at the head of the table.

Okay — are you really willing to die on this, or is this just to needle Alex?

Both, and joyfully — that is the whole spirit of this series. I truly believe Chick-fil-A Sauce is the best thing that ever happened to a waffle fry, and I am also having the time of my life being right about it in front of my own child. Plant your flag in the comments and pick your side. I will be right here at the head of the table, dipping, waiting, and quietly winning.
