The Hill I Will Die On: Team Oregano — I Can Pass on Basil Every Time

The Hill I Will Die On today is about herbs. Specifically, the great basil versus oregano debate — and I am here to tell you exactly where I stand. I love the smell and taste of oregano. I can pass on basil every single time. Firmly, proudly, unapologetically Team Oregano. This IS a hill I will die on.

Now I want to be clear — I understand basil has its fans. Fresh basil on a caprese salad, basil in a pesto, a little basil scattered over fresh pasta. I see the appeal. I genuinely do. But for me, in my kitchen, when I reach for an herb to season something, it is oregano every time. The smell alone when you open that jar — warm, earthy, a little peppery — that is what cooking smells like in my house. Basil smells like a garden. Oregano smells like dinner.

Oregano is in my soups. It is in my Italian dishes. It is in my marinades and my sauces and my roasted vegetables. According to The Spruce Eats guide to oregano, this herb has been a cornerstone of Mediterranean cooking for centuries — and honestly, that tracks. It is bold, it is dependable, and it knows what it is. Basil, by comparison, is fragile. It wilts the second you breathe on it. You have to add it at the last second or it turns dark and sad. Oregano does not have that kind of drama. Oregano shows up and does the work.

I have nothing against the people in the basil camp. I respect you. I will cook for you. But I am not changing my position. Team Oregano. All day, every day. Come at me in the comments — I genuinely cannot wait to hear where you land on this one.
