The Hill I Will Die On: Black Licorice Jelly Beans Are the Best Jelly Bean
The Hill I Will Die On today is one that I know is going to cost me some friends, and I am okay with that. Black licorice jelly beans are the best jelly bean flavor, and I have loved them my entire life. I know most of you are reaching for the red ones. I know you’re skipping right past the black ones in the bag. That’s fine. Leave them all for me. I stand by every single one.
I understand the black licorice jelly bean is the underdog. I get it. Every Easter, every bag of Jelly Belly, every candy dish — people are pushing them aside and acting like they are some kind of punishment. They are not a punishment. They are the prize. The anise flavor is bold and distinct and it tastes like a jelly bean that actually has an opinion. I respect that in a candy. And according to CandyStore.com’s jelly bean flavor rankings, black licorice is consistently one of the most divisive flavors out there — people either love it or can’t stand it. I am firmly, proudly, unapologetically in the love it camp.
Now I want to be clear — I am not a licorice-everything person. I don’t need licorice ice cream or licorice tea or licorice-flavored anything else. But in jelly bean form? I am absolutely committed. The black jelly bean is superior. This is my hill. I will die on it. You can come after me in the comments and I genuinely look forward to it.
