The Hill I Will Die On: Hazelnut Is the Best Flavor — I Will Not Be Argued With

The Hill I Will Die On: Hazelnut is the best flavor — hazelnut coffee, hazelnut creamer, and Nutella by Stephanie Longstreth

The hill I will die on today is hazelnut — and I will die on it happily, enthusiastically, and without a single regret. Hazelnut is the best flavor. Full stop. When my coffee tastes extra good, it is because there is hazelnut in it. Every single time. And do I even need to say the word Nutella? I did not think so.

I understand that some people are vanilla people. Some people are caramel people. I respect every single one of you and I will bake for you and I will not complain. But when it is my turn to pick — when I am the one ordering the coffee, choosing the creamer, or standing in front of a spread at a party — I am going hazelnut. It is warm and it is nutty and it is somehow both cozy and a little fancy at the same time. There is nothing else like it.

According to The Spruce Eats on hazelnut flavor, hazelnuts have one of the most complex and recognizable flavor profiles of any nut — rich, slightly sweet, and earthy in a way that plays beautifully with chocolate, coffee, and baked goods. Yes. Exactly. That is exactly right. The hill I will die on hazelnut is firmly planted in science as much as it is in personal preference. It is not just a flavor — it is a whole experience. Hazelnut coffee on a cold morning. Hazelnut spread on warm toast. Hazelnut in a cake. It is never a bad answer.

The hill I will die on is this: hazelnut belongs in everything. Your coffee, your dessert, your creamer, your chocolate. If there is a hazelnut option, it is the right option. I will not be argued with. Come find me in the comments and tell me where you land — I genuinely want to know who else is on Team Hazelnut and who I need to have a very serious conversation with.

Hill I Will Die On — Hazelnut FAQ

Isn’t hazelnut too sweet for coffee?

I hear this one a lot and I respectfully disagree. A good hazelnut flavor in coffee is not cloyingly sweet — it is warm and nutty and it rounds out the bitterness in a way that vanilla and caramel simply cannot. If yours is too sweet, you might just need a different brand. Do not give up on the hill I will die on hazelnut over one bad creamer.

What about vanilla? Isn’t that the superior flavor?

Vanilla is fine. I said what I said. It is perfectly pleasant, completely inoffensive, and utterly forgettable. Hazelnut has a personality. Hazelnut walks into the room and you notice. Vanilla just sort of… arrives. I have nothing against vanilla people but I do feel a little sorry for them.

Why do you prefer hazelnut over caramel?

Caramel is dessert. Caramel in my coffee feels like I am starting my morning with candy, and that is not the energy I am going for. Hazelnut feels intentional — like a real flavor choice, not a sugar delivery system. This is the hill I will die on: hazelnut is a flavor, caramel is a topping.

Does hazelnut work in savory dishes?

It absolutely does and this is an underrated point. Toasted hazelnuts on roasted vegetables, hazelnut oil in a salad dressing, crushed hazelnuts on green beans — it is a legitimate savory player. Most people only think of hazelnut in sweet applications and they are missing out on half the picture.

Is Nutella actually that good or is it just nostalgia?

It is actually that good. I will not hear otherwise. Yes, there is nostalgia involved. Yes, it is also just a jar of chocolate hazelnut spread that is objectively delicious on toast, on fruit, on a spoon, directly from the jar at midnight. Both things are true simultaneously and I am at peace with that.
