Cereal for Dinner — When the Plumber Has the Water Off All Afternoon

Cereal for dinner is officially a legitimate meal choice, and I have the plumbing bill to prove it. Last week our plumber was at the house all afternoon with the water turned off, and by the time he finished and packed up, there was water in every place you do not want water to be and absolutely none of the places you do. I stood in my kitchen, looked at my stove, looked at my sink, looked at my family — and I reached for the Honeycomb.

Some days adulting really bites the big one — and leaves a wet mess everywhere. That is just the truth. I cook for a crowd nearly every single night. I plan menus, I make grocery lists, I have a whole system. And then a plumber shows up and my whole system goes right out the window along with whatever was supposed to happen at 6 o’clock. Cereal for dinner it is. No apologies.

Look at this face. This is the face of a woman who is leaning ALL the way in. No shame. No regrets. Honeycomb cereal in a big red bowl is dinner and it is getting eaten with full commitment. A YouGov survey found that 81% of adults think cereal is a completely normal substitute for any meal of the day — and I am proudly in that 81%. Science says I made the right call.

There is something freeing about a cereal for dinner night, honestly. No dishes. No prep. No cleanup beyond rinsing a bowl. The kids think it is hilarious and kind of exciting and I think it is the universe telling me to take a breath. The plumber fixed the pipes. The water came back on. And the Honeycomb got the job done. That is a win in my book.

This is real life at the Longstreth house. I cook for seven people almost every single night and I plan and I prep and I do my absolute best — and sometimes the plumber wins and Honeycomb is the hero of the evening. I would not trade this chaotic, loud, wet-floors-and-cereal life for anything.
Cereal for Dinner FAQ — The Questions You Are Definitely Asking
Is cereal actually okay for dinner?
Absolutely yes. Most cereals are fortified with vitamins and minerals, they have fiber, and they pair with milk for a little protein boost. Is it a Sunday pot roast? No. Is it dinner when the plumber has had the water off for four hours and everyone is hungry? One hundred percent yes.
What do you do when dinner plans completely fall apart?
You adapt. In a house with seven people there is always something in the pantry that can become a meal — cereal, eggs, peanut butter toast, a frozen pizza. The plan falling apart is not a failure. It is just Tuesday. Or apparently Thursday with a plumber involved.
How do you keep your sanity cooking for a crowd every night?
Meal planning, grocery lists, and a very solid pantry are my three best friends. I share my weekly meal plans right here on the blog every week so you can steal my menu if you need it. And on the nights the plan goes sideways — cereal for dinner is always waiting in the cabinet.
What is the best cereal for a cereal for dinner situation?
I stand by Honeycomb. It is hearty, it holds up in milk without getting soggy in the first thirty seconds, and there is something about the honeycomb shape that just feels substantial enough to qualify as dinner. Frosted Mini-Wheats are also a strong cereal for dinner contender if you want to feel slightly more grown-up about the whole situation.
Does this kind of thing happen often at your house?
More often than I would like to admit. A family of seven in a house with two cats means something is always happening that was not on the schedule. I have learned to hold my dinner plans loosely and keep the pantry stocked. The cereal for dinner nights are the ones everybody remembers anyway.
