Tuesday Tip: Stop Saying “There’s Nothing to Eat” — 3 Pantry Meals Under $8
This Tuesday tip is one I have been wanting to share for a while — stop saying there’s nothing to eat. You probably already have dinner in your pantry right now. I’m sharing three real meals you can make entirely from pantry staples, no grocery run required. Each one feeds six to eight people and costs under eight dollars. Pantry meals have saved my family more times than I can count, and these three are on permanent rotation at the Longstreth house.

There is no shame in a pantry meal. In fact, I’d argue that knowing how to pull dinner from what you already have is one of the most valuable kitchen skills you can build. The three meals below are proof that a full pantry is a full dinner table — even when it doesn’t feel like it.
Pantry Chili — 6 to 8 Servings, $7.80
- 6 cans of beans (kidney, black, or whatever you have)
- 1 can tomato sauce
- 1 packet chili seasoning
- 2 cups beef broth
- Optional: minced onion, garlic powder, chili powder, cinnamon
Six cans of beans, one can of tomato sauce, one packet of chili seasoning, and two cups of beef broth. That is your chili. If you have extra seasonings on hand — minced onion, garlic powder, chili powder, or even a pinch of cinnamon — throw them in. But even without the extras, you have dinner for a crowd. I use Better Than Bouillon Beef Base (Shop on Amazon) instead of canned broth — it makes a noticeably richer chili and it’s a staple I always keep in my pantry. If you want to go deeper on chili, check out my Daddy’s Famous Crockpot Chili — that one has a secret ingredient you’re not going to see coming.
Tuna Noodle Casserole — 8 Servings, $6.51
- 16 oz box elbow noodles
- 3 cans tuna, drained
- 2 cans cream of chicken soup
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1 sleeve Ritz crackers
- Salt and pepper
This is the one my kids actually requested. I am making this for dinner tonight. A 16-ounce box of elbow noodles, three cans of tuna (drained), two cans of cream of chicken soup, half a cup of mayonnaise, salt and pepper, and a sleeve of Ritz crackers on top. Nine by thirteen pan. That is it. If you have a frozen vegetable, you can throw it in or serve it on the side — but you do not need it. This casserole is complete as written, and it is absolutely a crowd pleaser whether you think it sounds good or not. My kids love it and they ask for it by name.
Spaghetti with Sauce — 6 to 8 Servings, $4.51
- 16 oz spaghetti noodles
- 1 jar spaghetti sauce
- 1 onion, sautéed (optional)
- Italian seasoning and garlic powder (optional)
- Grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
You know it. You love it. A box of spaghetti and a jar of sauce — that is already dinner. But if you want to jazz it up a little, sauté an onion and add it to the sauce, shake in some Italian seasoning and garlic powder, and finish with grated Parmesan. This is actually exactly how I make spaghetti when I make spaghetti. It is simple, it is cheap (this one comes in under five dollars even with all the extras), and every single person at my table eats it without complaint. That alone makes it a winner.
These three pantry meals are proof that a well-stocked pantry is one of the best investments you can make for your family. According to Budget Bytes, keeping the right pantry staples on hand means you can always feed yourself — even if you haven’t gone grocery shopping in weeks. I could not agree more.
