Jason’s Taco Pizza — The Iowa Recipe My Whole Crowd Asks For
My Husband Said Taco Pizza Was the Best Thing on the Planet. Turns Out He Was Right.
Taco pizza is the recipe my husband Jason carried into our marriage straight from Iowa, and it’s the best of both worlds — taco night and pizza night collided into one pan. He grew up on it and always swore it was the greatest thing on the planet, so years ago I finally had to try. Turns out he was right. A salsa base instead of pizza sauce, taco-seasoned ground turkey, a generous layer of melty cheese, and then the whole thing gets finished after it bakes with crushed Doritos, crisp shredded lettuce, and fresh tomatoes. It’s now the pizza my whole crowd asks for by name.

Ingredients
- 1 whole wheat pizza crust or easy homemade dough (see my recipe), or store-bought
- 1 lb ground turkey or ground beef
- 1 packet (1 oz) taco seasoning
- ½ cup salsa
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ cup onion diced
- ½ cup sliced black olives
- Jalapeños optional
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup shredded mozzarella
- ½ cup Sargento 4 Cheese Mexican blend optional
- 2 cups Shredded lettuce
- 1 cup tomato chopped
- 1 cup Doritos crushed
- Sour cream optional
- Cholula or hot sauce optional
Equipment

Method
- Preheat oven to 425°F (or 475°F if using whole wheat crust). Prepare your pizza crust on a stoneware pizza pan.
- Brown the ground turkey (or beef) in a skillet over medium heat. Drain excess fat and stir in the taco seasoning per packet directions. Set aside.
- Spread 1/2 cup salsa over the pizza crust like pizza sauce. Sprinkle with 1/2 tsp garlic powder.
- Top with the taco-seasoned meat, diced onion, sliced black olives, and any other desired toppings (jalapeños, etc.).
- Sprinkle on the shredded cheeses — aim for 1 1/2 to 2 cups of cheese total.
- Bake at 425°F for 15-20 minutes (or 475°F for 15 minutes if using whole wheat crust), until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the crust is golden brown.
- Once out of the oven, top with shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, and crushed Doritos. Finish with sour cream or hot sauce if desired. Slice and serve immediately.

Jason grew up in Iowa eating taco pizza, and he always thought it was the greatest thing on the planet. So years ago, I had to try. Turns out he was right — it’s the best of both worlds, taco night and pizza night collided into one pan, and now it’s the pizza my whole family asks for. The base is Pace Chunky salsa instead of pizza sauce, hit with a little garlic powder for flavor. Then taco-seasoned ground turkey — I season mine with Taco Bell taco seasoning — onion, black olives, and a generous layer of cheese. After it comes out of the oven you finish it with crushed Doritos , shredded lettuce, and chopped tomatoes, plus sour cream or Cholula for anyone who wants it.
What makes it work is treating the cold toppings as toppings, not bake-ins. The lettuce stays crisp because it never sees the oven. The Doritos stay crunchy because they go on after. The tomatoes stay fresh. You get the melty, cheesy, taco-meat warmth from the bottom and the cool crunch on top, and that contrast is exactly what makes a great taco great — just on a pizza.

The night I made the one in the video, Jason asked for his on whole wheat crust because he eats Mediterranean — so I made the dough with whole wheat flour. Whole wheat holds heavy toppings beautifully and gives that slightly nutty flavor that pairs so well with taco seasoning. If you want that version, I wrote it up on its own: my whole wheat pizza crust. But any crust works here — my easy homemade pizza dough, store-bought refrigerated dough, even a pre-baked crust. The taco assembly is the star; the crust just carries it. And if your crew loves a build-your-own night, that same pizza dough folds up into homemade calzones, too — everyone fills their own.
A Few Things That Make Taco Pizza Even Easier
- Brown the turkey well and drain it. Taco-seasoned ground turkey should be cooked all the way through and drained before it goes on the crust — any extra grease left in the pan ends up pooling on your pizza. Brown it, drain it, then spread it.
- Hit the crust with garlic powder before the salsa. Right after you spread the dough on the pan, sprinkle a little garlic powder across the whole surface. It seasons the crust itself, not just the toppings, and the difference under a salsa base is huge.
- Cold toppings go on AFTER baking — every time. The lettuce, tomatoes, crushed Doritos , and sour cream all go on after the pizza comes out of the oven. The hot stuff — meat, cheese, olives — bakes in. The cool, crisp stuff finishes it. Don’t bake your lettuce.
- Use a salsa you’d happily eat with a chip. The salsa is your sauce, so it carries the whole pizza. I reach for Pace Chunky salsa — medium for our crowd — but use whatever heat level your people like.
- Set up a topping bar for a crowd. When the kids are home, I bake the pizzas with the meat and cheese, then put the lettuce, tomatoes, Doritos, sour cream, and hot sauce out in bowls and let everyone finish their own slice. Nobody fights over toppings, and it keeps the crunchy stuff crunchy.
Taco Pizza FAQ — The Questions I Get Every Time
What temperature do I bake taco pizza, and how do I know the meat is done?
Bake at 425°F for the easy white-flour crust or 475°F for a whole wheat crust, about 15 to 20 minutes, until the bottom is golden and crispy and the cheese is bubbly. The taco meat goes on already cooked, so brown your ground turkey all the way through first — the USDA says ground poultry is safe at an internal temperature of 165°F, and you can check their safe minimum temperature chart any time you want to double-check. Every oven runs a little different, so peek at the 15-minute mark.
What’s the best cheese for taco pizza?
I aim for 1½ to 2 cups of cheese on one pizza, and for taco pizza I use a mix — cheddar for the taco flavor, mozzarella for the melt and stretch, and a little Sargento 4 Cheese Mexican blend for extra flavor. Plain shredded cheddar and mozzarella work fine too. Pre-shredded is completely fine here — don’t overthink it.
Can I use a store-bought crust instead of homemade?
Absolutely. The taco assembly works on whatever crust you have — my easy homemade pizza dough, my whole wheat crust, store-bought refrigerated dough, or a pre-baked crust. Make it as easy or as from-scratch as you want it. The salsa, the seasoned turkey, and the cold toppings are what make it taco pizza.
Why do the Doritos go on after baking?
Crunch. If you bake Doritos on top of the pizza they go soft and chewy, and the crunch is half the reason taco pizza is so good. Crush them and scatter them on right after the pizza comes out of the oven, along with the lettuce and tomatoes, so they stay crisp all the way to the plate.
What’s a good substitute if I don’t have Doritos?
Crushed tortilla chips work just fine — you lose a little of the cheesy Doritos seasoning but you keep the crunch. Crushed Fritos are great too if you want more of a corn flavor. Whatever you crush on top, add it after the pizza bakes so it stays crunchy.
How do I make taco pizza for a crowd?
Taco pizza is built for a crowd. Make as many crusts as you need — each one feeds 3 to 4 people with a salad alongside — bake them with the meat and cheese, then set out the cold toppings in bowls and let everyone finish their own. When the whole family is home I’ll run an assembly line with multiple pans, and the topping bar means nobody’s slice is exactly the same.
