Sounds Wrong. Tastes Like the Best Thing You’ve Ever Made.

This knockoff Monte Cristo sandwich is the kind of recipe that makes you do a double take when you read the ingredients — butter, bread, ham, American cheese, powdered sugar, and raspberry jam. Sounds wrong. But the moment you take that first bite, crispy golden buttery bread with melty cheese and ham, dusted with powdered sugar and dipped in cold raspberry jam, you will understand. Savory meets sweet and you can never go back.

My husband Jason used to make grilled cheese sandwiches at a little snack stand in college, and he taught me the most important thing about a great grilled cheese — butter every single square inch of the bread. Be generous. That is the foundation of this sandwich, and everything else is just the happy accident of someone deciding to add powdered sugar and raspberry jam to a ham and cheese.

If you have ever had a Monte Cristo sandwich at a restaurant — ham and turkey and cheese between layers of bread, deep fat fried, dusted with powdered sugar, and served with raspberry jam — this is the at-home version. Much simpler, fewer calories, and honestly? Just as good. We make this on repeat at the Longstreth house.

Total Time 10 minutes
Servings: 2
Course: Lunch
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • Salted butter generous — cover every square inch of the bread
  • White sandwich bread 4 slices
  • Deli ham 4–6 slices
  • American cheese slices 2–4 slices
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Raspberry jam for dipping

Method

  1. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
  2. Butter one side of each piece of bread generously — cover every single square inch. This is the key to a perfect crust.
  3. Place two slices of bread butter side down in the hot pan.
  4. Layer cheese and ham on top, then place the remaining bread slices on top with butter side up.
  5. Cook until the bottom is deep golden brown and crispy, then flip and cook the other side until equally golden. Reduce heat if needed to let the cheese melt through completely.
  6. Remove from pan and cut in halves or quarters.
  7. Dust generously with powdered sugar.
  8. Serve with raspberry jam for dipping and take a bite. Life changing.

Notes

Makes as many sandwiches as you want to make — just scale up the ingredients. This recipe is endlessly scalable.
The butter coverage is everything. Don’t swipe — cover. Every square inch. That’s Jason’s secret and it works every time.

Why This Knockoff Monte Cristo Sandwich Works

The magic of this knockoff Monte Cristo sandwich is in the contrast. You have savory — buttery toasted bread, salty ham, melty American cheese. And then you have sweet — the dusting of powdered sugar, the cold tangy raspberry jam for dipping. Those two things should not work together. And yet they absolutely do. It is the same reason people love chicken and waffles, or maple syrup on bacon. Sweet and savory together is one of the great flavor combinations in the world, and this sandwich is a five-ingredient proof of that.

The other secret is Jason’s grilled cheese technique: butter every single square inch of the bread. Not a swipe, not a suggestion of butter — coverage. That is what gives you the deep golden crust that holds up to the powdered sugar and the jam without going soggy. Do not skip the butter.

Knockoff Monte Cristo Sandwich FAQ — Everything You Want to Know

What is a Monte Cristo sandwich?

A Monte Cristo is a ham and cheese sandwich that is battered and deep fried, then dusted with powdered sugar and served with jam for dipping. It originated as a simplified version of the French Croque Monsieur and became popular in American diners and cafes in the 1950s. The Kitchn has a great deep dive into the history and the classic technique if you want to go down that rabbit hole.

How is this knockoff Monte Cristo different from the original?

The original Monte Cristo is deep fried in an egg batter, which makes it richer and more labor-intensive. This knockoff Monte Cristo sandwich skips the egg batter and the deep frying entirely — you are just making a buttered grilled cheese sandwich with ham, which takes about five minutes. You still get the powdered sugar and the raspberry jam, which is the whole point. Simpler, faster, and honestly something you can make on a Tuesday night without any drama.

What kind of bread works best for a knockoff Monte Cristo sandwich?

Regular white sandwich bread is exactly what you want here. You need something that will soak up the butter and get crispy and golden on the outside without being so thick that the cheese does not melt. Brioche or Texas toast work too if you want something a little richer — but the classic everyday white bread is the Longstreth household standard and it is perfect.

Can I use a different jam instead of raspberry?

Raspberry jam is the classic pairing because the tartness cuts through the richness of the buttery bread and cheese. But strawberry jam works beautifully, blackberry jam is wonderful, and if you have a blueberry jam in the fridge it will absolutely do the job. The key is using a real jam with some tartness to it — a sweet jelly without much fruit character will not give you the same contrast.

Can I make a knockoff Monte Cristo sandwich ahead of time?

This one is best fresh off the pan — it takes five minutes and the crispy crust is the whole experience. You can have all your ingredients ready to go (butter out, bread sliced, ham and cheese laid out) and it comes together so fast there is really no need to prep ahead. If you do need to hold it for a few minutes, set it on a wire rack rather than a plate so the bottom does not steam and go soft.

How do I know when the knockoff Monte Cristo sandwich is done?

You are looking for deep golden brown on both sides and melted cheese all the way through. If the bread is getting too dark before the cheese melts, turn the heat down and give it another minute. The medium-high heat start gets the crust going, and you can reduce to medium to finish it off and let the cheese get fully melty. When you cut it and the cheese pulls — that is your signal.
