A 20-Minute Dinner That Tastes Like You Tried All Day

I make this Cuban inspired sausage and rice when I have no time but I still want dinner to taste really good. Smoked turkey sausage caramelized with bell peppers and onions, Vigo yellow rice, seasoned black beans, and if you’re in Tampa — you already know — fresh Cuban bread on the side. This is a 20-minute meal that tastes like you spent all day on it.

Tools & Ingredients I Recommend for This Recipe

  • SENSARTE Nonstick Ceramic Saute Pan 12-Inch 5QT (Shop on Amazon) — This is the exact pan I used for this recipe! PFOA and PFAS free, no Teflon, induction compatible, and it comes with a lid. The wide base gives you plenty of room to get a good caramelized color on the sausage without crowding the pan.
  • Kinder’s The Blend Seasoning (Shop on Amazon) — My everyday seasoning for basically everything. A little goes a long way and it adds the perfect savory depth to the sausage and peppers without overpowering the Cuban flavors.

  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper chopped
  • 1 can black beans

Notes

Turkey smoked sausage keeps this lighter without sacrificing any flavor — but any smoked sausage works great here.
Get some good caramelization on the sausage before adding the peppers and onions — that’s where the flavor is! Don’t rush that first step. Vigo yellow rice is the go-to brand here. Follow the package directions exactly for the best results. Cuban bread is the ideal pairing if you can find it at your local store. In Florida it’s easy to find — but a crusty French loaf or ciabatta works beautifully too.

Start your rice and beans first — they take the longest. While those are going, slice your smoked turkey sausage and get your pan hot with a little avocado oil. You want that sausage to get some real color on it, not just warm through. Then in go your onion, red bell pepper, and green bell pepper. Season everything generously with Kinder’s The Blend and let it all cook together until the peppers are just tender and everything smells incredible.

Plate it up with a scoop of yellow rice, a big spoonful of black beans, all those gorgeous sausage and peppers, and tuck a slice of Cuban bread right on the side. That’s your plate. Come on to the table.

Why do you call it Cuban inspired?
Because Stephanie keeps it real — smoked turkey sausage isn’t a traditional Cuban ingredient, but it’s affordable, the kids love it, and it works beautifully with the yellow rice and black beans. The flavors are Cuban inspired, the shortcuts are family approved.

Can I use a different sausage?
Yes — smoked chicken sausage or andouille both work great here. Just keep it a smoked sausage so you get that caramelized color in the pan.

Where do I find Cuban bread?
If you’re in Tampa or anywhere in Central Florida, your grocery store almost certainly carries it. Outside of Florida, check a Latin grocery store or bakery. In a pinch, a good French baguette or hoagie roll is a fine substitute.

Can I make this for a crowd?
Absolutely — just scale up the sausage and peppers and cook a second box of Vigo yellow rice. This feeds six easily as written and doubles without any trouble.
