The reason this Cuban inspired sausage and rice works on a weeknight is that the heavy lifting happens in parallel. Start your rice and beans first — they take the longest. While those are going, slice your smoked turkey sausage and get your pan hot with a little avocado oil . You want that sausage to get some real color on it, not just warm through. Then in go your onion, red bell pepper, and green bell pepper. Season everything generously with Kinder's The Blend and let it all cook together until the peppers are just tender and everything smells incredible.

Plate it up with a scoop of Vigo yellow rice, a big spoonful of black beans, all those gorgeous sausage and peppers, and tuck a slice of Cuban bread right on the side. That’s your plate. Come on to the table.
A Few Things That Make Cuban Inspired Sausage and Rice Even Easier
- Start the rice and beans FIRST. The rice takes 25 minutes, the beans take 10. The sausage and peppers take 12. Start the Vigo yellow rice before you do anything else, and everything will land at the table at the same time.
- Don’t crowd the sausage in the pan. Spread the sausage slices in a single layer and let them sit undisturbed for two or three minutes before stirring. Crowded sausage steams instead of caramelizes — and that golden-brown color is what makes this taste like real Cuban food, not just a quick stir-fry.
- Slice the peppers thick, not thin. Quarter-inch strips, not matchsticks. Thin peppers turn to mush in the pan; thicker strips hold their shape and give you real texture against the sausage. They’ll cook through in about 5 minutes that way.
- Season HEAVILY. The Cuban flavor profile is bold. Don’t go light on the Kinder's The Blend — sprinkle generously over everything in the pan and toss again right before serving. Underseasoned sausage and peppers will taste flat next to the yellow rice.
- Don’t skip the Cuban bread if you can find it. If you’re in Tampa or anywhere in Central Florida, your grocery store carries it. It’s the move. A buttered slice with the sausage and rice is the difference between “dinner” and “dinner at the table.” A French baguette or hoagie roll works in a pinch.
Cuban Inspired Sausage and Rice FAQ — The Questions I Get Every Time
Why do you call it Cuban inspired?
Because I keep it real — smoked turkey sausage isn’t a traditional Cuban ingredient, but it’s affordable, the kids love it, and it works beautifully with the yellow rice and black beans. The flavors are Cuban inspired, the shortcuts are family approved. A truly authentic version would use Cuban chorizo or longaniza, which I love and absolutely recommend if you can find them at your local Latin market.
Can I use a different sausage in this Cuban inspired sausage and rice?
Yes — smoked chicken sausage or andouille both work great here. Just keep it a smoked sausage so you get that caramelized color in the pan. Fresh Italian sausage doesn’t have the same depth of flavor for this dish. If you want to lean into traditional Cuban, swap in chorizo or longaniza.
Where do I find Cuban bread?
If you’re in Tampa or anywhere in Central Florida, your grocery store almost certainly carries it. Publix bakes its own and so does Winn-Dixie. Outside of Florida, check a Latin grocery store or bakery. In a pinch, a good French baguette or hoagie roll is a fine substitute — split it, butter it, and toast it cut-side down in a hot pan.
What brand of yellow rice should I use?
Vigo yellow rice . Not a substitution recommendation, an actual recommendation. Vigo is the Tampa brand and it’s what every Cuban family I know cooks with. The saffron and turmeric blend gives you that signature bright yellow color and a savory depth other yellow rice mixes don’t match. Any grocery store in Florida carries it, and you can get it on Amazon if you’re elsewhere.
Can I make this Cuban inspired sausage and rice ahead of time?
You can prep the components ahead — slice the sausage, dice the onion and peppers, and store everything separately in the fridge for up to 2 days. When it’s dinner time, the whole thing comes together in 20 minutes. I don’t recommend cooking the whole dish ahead and reheating; the peppers lose their texture and the rice gets gummy. Prep ahead, cook fresh.
Can I make this for a crowd?
Absolutely — just scale up the sausage and peppers and cook a second box of Vigo yellow rice. This feeds six easily as written and doubles without any trouble. For a true crowd (12+), I cook the sausage and peppers in two batches so I don’t crowd the pan, then combine everything in a large serving dish to keep warm while I finish the second batch.
