Eggs and Ketchup: The Hill I Will Die On 🍳
Eggs and ketchup. I need to talk about this. My feelings about eggs are strong — my favorite way is scrambled with butter, topped with salt and pepper. An occasional omelette? Sure, I can get behind that. But ketchup at breakfast? On your eggs? On your hashbrowns? No. Absolutely not. I cannot be budged on this one. Ketchup is a great condiment. It has its place. Breakfast is not that place — and especially not on eggs. Gravy? Yes. Salsa? Yes. Hot sauce? Yes. Ketchup? Hard no. This is my hill and I will die on it.
Look, I know there are people out there who put ketchup on their eggs. I have met them. I have fed them. I love them. I disagree with them on this one specific issue. Ketchup is tangy and sweet and it just does not belong anywhere near a plate of eggs. The flavor combination is genuinely offensive to me and I will not pretend otherwise. Scrambled eggs deserve butter and salt. That’s it. That’s the whole recipe. Ketchup is for burgers and fries and maybe a hot dog if you’re feeling casual. Not breakfast. Never breakfast.
Now, if you want to tell me I’m wrong, I genuinely encourage you — that’s the whole point of this series. What do YOU put on your eggs? Tell me in the comments. I want to know if I’m alone on this hill or if I have company. And if you’re a ketchup-on-eggs person, explain yourself. I’m listening. I won’t change my mind, but I’m listening. 😄
And if you’re looking for breakfast inspiration that does NOT involve ketchup, the Serious Eats guide to perfect scrambled eggs is absolutely worth a read.
