Kitchen Favorites: KitchenAid Stand Mixer

My KitchenAid stand mixer is my kitchen favorite this week, and y’all, this girl is older than all of my children. My parents gave her to me back when we lived in Kentucky, about 25 years ago, and she still fires up every single time I need her. Nobody pays me to say that. KitchenAid has never contacted me, this is not sponsored, and she was a gift from my parents, not from any company.

• Mine is about 25 years old and KitchenAid does not make her anymore, so this is the one I would buy today. Mine has been dented, dropped, and run through every holiday baking season, and she still goes. And of course, it is red.

This girl is older than all of my children.

I have to be honest with you. I have not shopped for a stand mixer in a very long time, because I have never needed to. She has some dents and some dings. She has lost a few pieces off the front. But she still gets behind me every time I have a bunch of holiday baking to do or a big crowd coming over. She is my partner. She is my trusted co-worker.

I love that she is red. She is probably one of the very first red things I got for my kitchen, back when I was just starting to build a red kitchen.

Why My KitchenAid Stand Mixer Has Lasted 25 Years

A couple of times she has been knocked off the counter and dumped on the floor right in the middle of beating something. She just keeps going. I honestly think these mixers are pretty indestructible. Twenty-five years of a busy kitchen with five kids in it is a real test, and she passed it.

She is also the reason I make some of my favorite things the way I do. My Mama’s Banana Bread goes straight into the stand mixer, bananas and all, with the butter, sugar, and eggs. And when the holidays come and I am baking for a crowd, like the big pans in my Desserts for a Crowd roundup, she is right there with me.

What Came With My KitchenAid Stand Mixer

Mine came with one heavy steel bowl and three attachments: the dough hook, the flat paddle, and the wire whisk. I use all three of them. KitchenAid has a good guide to which beater does what if you are new to a stand mixer, but the short version is paddle for batters and cookie dough, hook for bread dough, and whisk for whipped cream and egg whites.

The paddle and the whisk. The dough hook is the third one, and I use all of them.

I do not try to keep them shiny. They go in the dishwasher, along with the bowl. There is probably permanent flour in all the cracks of this mixer. But she does not seem to care one bit.

🎁 Shopping for the cook in your family?

A KitchenAid is a big gift, but you cannot go wrong with it. If you are looking for more ideas, I put every pot, pan, platter and gadget I actually use to feed seven in one place, grouped by the problem each one solves.

KitchenAid Stand Mixer FAQ

Is Stephanie paid by KitchenAid?

No. KitchenAid has never contacted me, and this was not a gift or a sample from them. My mixer was a gift from my parents about 25 years ago. If that ever changes on any product I show you, I will say so right here, first thing.

Is the KitchenAid stand mixer in the box the exact one in the video?

No, and I want to be straight with you about that. Mine is about 25 years old and KitchenAid does not make that model anymore. The red one in the box at the top of this post is the one I would buy today.

Can the attachments go in the dishwasher?

Mine go right in with the bowl, and they have for years. If your beaters are plain, shiny aluminum, check your manual first, because those are usually meant to be washed by hand.

Is a KitchenAid stand mixer a good gift?

It is an extravagant gift, I know. But if you want to give the person who cooks in your family a really, really nice gift, you cannot go wrong with a KitchenAid. Mine was a gift, and I have used it for 25 years.

Do you really need a stand mixer to cook for a crowd?

Plenty of my recipes need nothing but a bowl and a spoon. But when I am doing a bunch of holiday baking or cooking for a big crowd, my stand mixer is the one I lean on. She is my partner in that kitchen.
