Side dish and salad recipes for a crowd — the potluck-ready sides, fresh salads, and simple vegetables that round out every Longstreth family meal.
Step Away From the Store-Bought Tub Homemade coleslaw is one of those things people assume is a project, and I am here to tell you it takes about five minutes and one bag of slaw mix. I dump everything into a bowl, give it a good stir, let it chill, and that is it —…
We Never Actually Made These Over a Campfire Campfire potatoes are thin-sliced potatoes, sweet onion, and a couple pats of butter sealed up in a little foil packet and baked until everything is tender and buttery — and here is my confession: I have never once made them over an actual campfire. Growing up, my…
Four Ingredients, Free Willy 2, and a Loaf Jason Looks Forward To Every Week This whole wheat sourdough bread is the loaf I bake about once a week so Jason has a wholesome whole grain option for his Mediterranean diet — and somehow, in the process, I ended up with a sourdough starter named Free…
I Have Not Bought Bread From the Store in Months This sourdough sandwich bread is the loaf that broke our store-bought bread habit clean in half. Soft, airy, just-tangy-enough, with a beautiful crusty exterior from a hot steamed oven — and my kids actually prefer it to anything that comes in a plastic bag. I…
I Don’t Even Like Potato Salad. I LOVE This Potato Salad. Grandma’s potato salad is the only potato salad I will actually eat — and I am not exaggerating. For most of my life, I would skip the bowl at every cookout. The mayo-soaked, store-bought, suspiciously yellow stuff that shows up at picnics? Not my…
I Got Tired of Making Potatoes the Same Way — So Now I Make These Garlic and herb smashed potatoes are the side dish that ruined every other potato for me. Baby gold potatoes get boiled until fork-tender, smashed flat on a foil-lined sheet pan, and brushed with melted butter, minced garlic, crushed rosemary, salt,…
A Vegetable? Technically, Yes. World’s best green beans — and yes, that is the actual name of this recipe in our house. Four ingredients, one pot, about thirty minutes on the stove, and three cans of green beans turn into the sweet-savory side my family asks for every single time. Butter, brown sugar, soy sauce,…
Two Side Dishes. One Plate. Dinner Looks Like You Tried. Baked potatoes and roasted asparagus are the two lowest-effort side dishes I rotate through every single week, and together they turn a piece of grilled chicken into a dinner that looks like you tried way harder than you did. The whole production is about 15…
Soft. Buttery. Topped With Flaky Salt. Gone in Ten Minutes. Same day sourdough dinner rolls — soft, buttery, and topped with flaky sea salt — are the rolls that disappeared off our table the second I set them down. The recipe is Emily Christensen’s at Country Roads Sourdough, and they’re exactly what she promises: light,…
Easier Than Making a Salad. Seriously. These roasted green beans and carrots are the no-fuss sheet pan side I make when I want something other than a salad with our pasta — and honestly, they take even less effort. No chopping a head of lettuce, no whisking a dressing, no worrying about whether the cucumbers…
