Cranberry Apple Salad — My Mother-in-Law’s Warm Holiday Side Dish
Two Cans and a Handful of Nuts. That Is the Whole Secret.
This cranberry apple salad is my mother-in-law’s, and it was a fixture on our Thanksgiving and Christmas tables for as long as I can remember. It is sweet, it is tart, it is warm, and it is made from two cans and a handful of nuts — which is a thing I have never once volunteered at the table. People take a bite and say oh my goodness what is this, and I just smile and pass the dish. It goes with turkey, it goes with ham, it goes with any fall dinner you can think of.
☕ This one is on the menu in my fall brunch menu — a whole brunch for eight to twelve, where it goes in the oven covered right alongside the quiches.

Cranberry Apple Salad
Start CookingIngredients
- 1 can whole berry cranberry sauce 14 oz
- 1 can apple pie filling 21 oz
- ½ cup pecan halves or walnuts, chopped
- 1 dash cinnamon optional
Equipment

Method Start Cooking
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Pour the apple pie filling into an 8×8 or 9×9 square baking dish, then add the whole berry cranberry sauce right on top of it.
- Mix the two together until the cranberries and apples are all smooshed up together. Add a dash of cinnamon if you like. You can do this in a bowl first if you prefer, but there is no reason to dirty one.
- Crush the pecans a little so the pieces are smaller than halves, then scatter them evenly over the top.
- Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes, until it is warm and bubbly all the way through. It does not need to crisp on top — cover it or leave it uncovered, it does not much matter. Serve it warm.

Notes
This bakes at the same temperature as most everything else on a holiday table, so it can go in the oven right alongside your turkey, your ham, or another casserole. That is exactly how it always ended up on ours.
Any nut works. Pecans and walnuts are what I reach for because everybody knows what they taste like and both go beautifully with the fruit. Hazelnuts would be lovely too.
It reheats well, so this is a good one to make the day before if your oven is going to be full.
Why This Cranberry Apple Salad Works
The thing that makes this cranberry apple salad work is that the two cans are doing completely different jobs. The whole berry cranberry sauce brings the tart and the color, and the berries stay whole enough that you actually feel them. The apple pie filling brings the sweet and the soft, and the apples hold their shape through the oven. Smoosh them together and you get something that is neither one — sweet-tart, warm, and just a little bit jammy.
Then the pecans go over the top, and that is the part people notice without knowing why. Everything under them is soft. A holiday plate is mostly soft — mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, rolls. A little crunch in the middle of all that is a genuine relief, and it is the reason this dish disappears.
And the honest truth is that the longest part of the whole recipe is getting the cranberry sauce out of the can. I have never understood why cranberry sauce does not have a pop top. Everything else about this is two minutes of stirring and thirty minutes of the oven doing the work, which is exactly what you want from a dish on a day when every burner is already spoken for.

A Few Things That Make Cranberry Apple Salad Even Easier
- Mix it right in the baking dish. Two cans and a spoon. There is no reason to dirty a bowl on a day when your sink is already full, and nothing about this needs a mixer or a whisk or any technique at all.
- Crush the pecans down a little. Halves are too big — they sit on top instead of settling in, and you get a mouthful of nut instead of a little crunch. Two or three passes with a knife is plenty. You are not trying to make dust.
- Cover it or don’t, it truly does not matter. The top does not need to crisp — the nuts are already crunchy on their own. I cover mine out of pure habit. If your oven is full of foil-covered pans anyway, this one can join them.
- The cinnamon is optional and I mean it. Some years I add a dash, some years I forget, and I could not tell you afterward which was which. Add it if your family likes a little warmth in the background. Skip it and nobody will miss it.
- Slide it in beside whatever else is baking. It goes at 350, which is the same temperature as most everything else on a holiday table, so it can share the oven with your ham or another casserole. That is exactly how it always ended up on ours.
Cranberry Apple Salad FAQ — The Questions I Get Every Time
What temperature and how long do I bake cranberry apple salad?
Bake it at 350°F for 30 minutes, until it is warm and bubbling all the way through. That is the whole cook time. You are not baking it so much as warming it — everything in the dish is already cooked, and the oven’s job is just to bring it together and get it hot in the middle.
Do I use whole berry or jellied cranberry sauce?
Whole berry, and this is the one thing I would not substitute. Ocean Spray describes the difference plainly — the jellied is smooth enough to slice, while the whole berry keeps an actual fruit texture. In this dish the apples are already soft, so if the cranberry goes smooth too you end up with one uniform sweet thing and nothing to push against. The berries are what keep it interesting.
Can I make cranberry apple salad ahead of time?
Yes, and on a holiday I would. Stir the two cans together in the dish, cover it, and refrigerate overnight. Hold the nuts back until right before it goes in the oven so they stay crunchy. If it is going in cold, give it another five or ten minutes and check that the middle is hot.
Is this served warm or cold?
Warm. That is the whole point of it and it is what makes it different from the cold cranberry relish most people are used to seeing on a holiday table. Straight from the can this is just cranberry sauce and pie filling sitting next to each other. Thirty minutes in the oven is what turns it into a dish.
What nuts work best?
Pecans or walnuts. I reach for those two because everybody already knows what they taste like, and both of them go beautifully with fruit. Hazelnuts would be lovely if that is what you have. Honestly any nut works — you are after a little crunch, not a particular flavor, so use what is in your pantry.
What do I serve with cranberry apple salad?
Turkey and ham are the two it grew up next to, and it is wonderful with either. On the plate in the photo up there it is sitting beside ham, green beans, roasted potatoes and a roll, which is a pretty typical Sunday here. It also works with roast pork or anything else where a little sweet-tart on the side would be welcome.
Can I double it for a bigger crowd?
Easily. Double everything into a 9×13 and add about ten minutes, checking that the center is hot and bubbling before you pull it. This is one of the simplest dishes on my table to scale, which is a large part of why it has stayed on it for so many years.
