Mid-Month Costco Haul for a Family of 7 — Plus My Daughter’s Birthday Cake
One Birthday Cake, One Blown Budget, and a Mid-Month Costco Run
This mid-month Costco haul is one I did not plan on making — I almost never shop Costco in the middle of the month, because it throws my whole budget right off a cliff. But my daughter Kira’s birthday is tomorrow, and I was not about to let that girl have a birthday without her cake. So Jon and I loaded up, made the run, and came home with one gorgeous tuxedo cake and a cart full of things we needed (plus a few we just wanted). Twenty-six items, one very happy birthday girl, and a receipt I am choosing not to stare at too hard. Come see what we grabbed.

Here is the honest truth about a mid-month Costco run: you walk in for one thing and walk out with a full cart. The cake was the whole mission — a beautiful chocolate tuxedo cake straight from the bakery case, because when it is your girl’s birthday, you get her the good one. Kira turns a year older tomorrow, and that cake was non-negotiable.

Of course, once you are inside, you remember everything else you are out of. We grabbed fresh chicken, a big block of mozzarella, Genova tuna, Greek yogurt, and the Chobani sweet cream creamer I keep in my coffee. The snack situation got handled too — Skinny Dipped almond bites, Crunchmaster tzatziki crisps, almond flour crackers, Kirkland sparkling water, and a variety pack of Izze for the kids. And because it is summer in Florida, a stack of beach towels came home with us, along with new toothbrushes and a little tiramisu I absolutely did not need but bought anyway.

A few of those things were not even for our pantry. Kira and Hannah are getting close to needing their own apartment, so I grabbed a couple of little starter pieces to send with them when the time comes — the kind of small head start every parent wants to give. It is a strange and wonderful season, watching the girls get ready to set up their own kitchens. I am proud and I am not entirely ready, both at the same time.
Jon came along for the whole trip, and he made out the best of all of us. He picked out a new pair of adidas shorts and had them on before we even made it back to the car. Here is the sweet part, though — he also picked out a matching pair for Kira as a birthday surprise. So shh, do not tell her. He is so pleased with himself, and honestly, so am I.

By the time we checked out, the receipt was twenty-six items long and the total made me laugh right out loud in the car — this, right here, is exactly why I do not shop Costco in the middle of the month. It threw me off budget, no question. But I was getting that cake for my daughter, and we needed a few of those things anyway, so I am making my peace with it and quietly hoping next month’s Costco bill comes in low. After we finished up, Hannah ran into Target while Jon and I sat in the car, chilling and admiring his new shorts. Not a bad way to spend a Wednesday.

What a Mid-Month Costco Haul Looks Like for a Family of 7
People always ask whether a Costco run is worth it for a big family, and a mid-month Costco haul like this one is the honest answer: sometimes you go off-cycle for one important thing — a birthday cake — and you round it out with the staples you are already low on. The fresh chicken gets portioned and frozen the day we get home so nothing goes to waste, because buying in bulk only saves money if you actually use it. If you ever wonder how long things keep in the freezer, the USDA’s freezing and food safety guide is the one I trust — food held at 0°F stays safe indefinitely, it is just the quality that changes over time. Build the next few dinners around what is fresh, freeze the rest, and let the pantry carry the middle of the month. That is the whole strategy, even on a week I did not plan to shop.
Mid-Month Costco Haul FAQ — Feeding a Family of 7
Why not just wait until the end of the month to shop Costco?
Normally I would — shopping Costco mid-month is exactly what throws my budget off, so I try to time my big runs. But a birthday cake does not wait, and Kira’s is tomorrow. Some things are worth going off-schedule for.
How much does a Costco haul cost for a big family?
This mid-month Costco haul came to twenty-six items and a total that made me laugh in the parking lot. It ran higher than a normal week because the birthday cake and a few apartment starter pieces for the girls were folded in. The per-meal math on the staples still comes out ahead of buying the same things in small grocery-store packages.
What do you actually stock up on at Costco for a big family?
Proteins first — this time it was fresh chicken — plus dairy like mozzarella and Greek yogurt, and the snacks and sparkling waters we burn through with teenagers in the house. I round it out with whatever household things we are low on, like toothbrushes and, apparently, a stack of beach towels.
How do you keep a big Costco haul from going to waste?
The freezer, every single time. I portion the chicken the day we get home and freeze whatever we will not use that week. Bulk only saves money if it does not spoil, so I plan the first few dinners around what is fresh and freeze the rest right away.
Did Jon really get matching shorts with his sister?
He did, and it was entirely his idea. He grabbed a pair of adidas shorts for himself and a matching pair for Kira’s birthday — so do not tell her yet. Watching him pick out a surprise for his sister was the best part of the whole trip.
