Why This 3 Ingredient Cherry Dump Cake Works
This 3 ingredient cherry dump cake has become one of our most requested recipes in the Longstreth house. A sweet older lady at our church told me it reminded her of her mama’s dump cake — and that is exactly what this is. Old fashioned flavor without the old fashioned effort. It is the perfect dessert for busy families, potlucks and gatherings, holiday meals, and game day parties.
The magic is in the layering. Two cans of Comstock cherry pie filling on the bottom, a full box of dry yellow cake mix dumped right on top (no mixing — that is where dump cake gets its name), and pats of cold salted butter scattered across the surface. As it bakes, the butter melts down through the cake mix and creates this golden, buttery, crumbly topping that looks like cobbler met streusel met perfection. The cherry filling bubbles up around the edges and you get a dessert that tastes like it took hours but only took 5 minutes to put together.
The best part? You can swap the cherry pie filling for any flavor — blueberry, peach, apple, or strawberry all work beautifully. No matter which filling you choose, the result is always warm, gooey, and absolutely delicious. Serve it warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or honestly both. You’ll thank me later. 🍒
A Few Things That Make 3 Ingredient Cherry Dump Cake Even Easier
- Slice the butter into 24 thin pats and cover the surface. This is the single biggest move in the recipe. The Kitchn calls it the cobblestone technique — thin pats laid out like little tiles across the entire top so every inch of cake mix gets butter contact. Skip this and you get dry powdery spots in the topping.
- Use two full cans of cherry pie filling. One can is not enough for a 9×13 — you’ll end up with bare patches at the corners. Two cans gives you cherry in every single bite, plus enough filling to bubble up around the edges as it bakes (which is how you know it’s done).
- Do NOT stir. I know it feels wrong to dump dry cake mix on top of pie filling and walk away. Trust the process. Stirring ruins the topping — you’ll get cake-batter consistency instead of the cobblestone crumble that makes a dump cake a dump cake.
- Bake it in a deep 9x13 — the filling bubbles up. A standard 9×13 works, but the deep one gives the cherry filling room to bubble without overflowing onto the bottom of your oven. Bonus: the glass lets you watch the magic happen.
- Pull it from the oven when the edges are bubbling and the top is deep golden. Pale and you have not given the cake mix enough time to crisp. Too dark and the cherry filling overcooks. Deep golden brown with cherry bubbling at the edges is the sweet spot — usually right around 50 minutes.
3 Ingredient Cherry Dump Cake FAQ — The Questions I Get Every Time
What temperature and how long do I bake 3 ingredient cherry dump cake?
Bake your 3 ingredient cherry dump cake at 350°F for 50 to 60 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the cherry filling is bubbling up around the edges. Every oven runs a little different, so I start checking at the 50-minute mark. You want a deep golden color on top — pale and underdone means the cake mix has not had a chance to fully melt and crisp. If the edges are browning faster than the center, you can loosely tent foil over the top for the last 10 minutes.
Do I have to mix the cake mix into the cherry filling?
No — and please do not. That is the whole point of a dump cake. You dump the cherry pie filling into the pan, dump the dry cake mix evenly on top, and dot the surface with cold butter. The butter melts down through the cake mix as it bakes and creates that signature crumbly, buttery topping. If you mix the cake mix in, you lose the cobbler-style top layer and end up with something more like a cherry cake. Just trust the dump.
Can I use a different pie filling instead of cherry?
Absolutely. The yellow cake mix and butter combo works with just about any fruit pie filling. Blueberry dump cake, peach dump cake, apple dump cake, and strawberry dump cake are all variations I have made and loved. For apple, I sometimes add a sprinkle of cinnamon on top of the cake mix before adding the butter. For peach, a pinch of nutmeg is a nice touch. The base recipe stays the same — two cans of pie filling, one box of cake mix, one stick of butter.
Can I make 3 ingredient cherry dump cake ahead of time?
Yes — and it actually holds up beautifully. You can bake it the morning of and let it sit covered at room temperature for up to 8 hours. If you want to make it the night before, refrigerate it once it has cooled, then warm it in a 300°F oven for about 15 minutes before serving. Day-two dump cake is honestly almost as good as fresh — the topping holds its texture and the filling stays gooey.
Can I freeze leftover cherry dump cake?
You can, but the topping does soften a little after freezing and thawing. If you want to freeze it, let the cake cool completely, then cover the pan tightly with plastic wrap and a layer of foil. It will keep in the freezer for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and re-warm in a 300°F oven for 15 to 20 minutes to crisp the topping back up. Honestly though, in our house this never makes it to the freezer — it disappears within a day.
Why is my dump cake topping dry or powdery in spots?
That happens when there is not enough butter coverage on the cake mix. The butter is what melts down and turns the dry cake mix into a golden crumble — anywhere there is no butter, the cake mix stays dry and powdery. The fix is to slice your stick of butter into thin pats (I do 24 thin slices from one stick) and scatter them evenly across the entire surface, including the corners. If you still see dry patches halfway through baking, you can pull the cake out and scatter another tablespoon or two of butter across the dry spots before returning it to the oven.
What is the best way to serve 3 ingredient cherry dump cake?
Warm, with vanilla ice cream. That is the answer 95% of the time at our house. The contrast of the warm bubbling cherry filling, the buttery crumbly topping, and the cold melty ice cream is everything. Whipped cream is a great runner-up if you do not have ice cream on hand. For potlucks I often skip the ice cream and just bring a can of whipped cream alongside — it travels better and folks can serve themselves. 🍒
